Rita Strack : Editor Nature Methods

Lecture 1 - Monday 17th Feb 2020 @ 10:30 am

Talk title: Publishing in Nature Methods and Nature Research journals
Bio: Rita Strack is a senior editor at Nature Methods, where she handles papers covering imaging, microscopy, RNA biology, and biochemistry. She did her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, where she studied and engineered improved variants of the red fluorescent protein DsRed. She then did her postdoctoral work at Weill Cornell, where she developed aptamer-based fluorescent tools for studying RNA dynamics in living cells. Rita has been an with Nature Methods since November of 2014.

Abstract: The process of publishing in Nature Research journals need not be a black box. This talk will introduce the audience to Nature Methods, describe our editorial process step-by-step, and cover frequently asked questions regarding presubmission inquiries, cover letters, different manuscript formats, the appeal process, and more. From there, I will discuss tips for presenting your research in the best light, with the goal of offering insight into what makes a paper stand out to editors. I hope to end with a Q&A session to address specific questions from the audience.

Professor David Weitz: Harvard

Lecture 2 - Tuesday 18th Feb 2020 @ 9:00 am

Bio: Dave Weitz is the Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Harvard. He is also Director of Materials Research Science and Engineering Center and the Co-Director of the BASF Advanced Research Initative. The Weitz group has interests ranging from fundamental physics to technological applications and from basic materials questions to specific biological problems. By applying technological advances in physics and materials the Weitz group has created a suite of microfluidic devices and approaches to enable high-throughput, high sensitivity, low volume assays to allow deeper understanding of biological processes and to selectively sort cells for further analysis. In Cytometry circles, Dave is perhaps best known as the father of modern droplet based cytometry techniques. In 2015 his work in single cell genomics culminated in the publication of the seminal articles involving DropSeq, inDrops, Hi-SCL and Single-cell ChIP-seq.

Dave has an outstanding publication record with 105,459 citation with a h-index of 169 but also works extensively with industry. Dave has an enviable commercialization track record with numerous patents and research within the group routinely leading to promising new technologies and giving rise to start-up companies.
