Event description

While this is an in-person event, an online livestream is also available to register for! If you are attending online and have a question you would like to see asked, please email pride@murdoch.edu.au

IDAHOBIT is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia and Transphobia, or as of 20222, the Day against LGBTIQA+ Discrimination. It has been observed since 2005 and is held every year on May 17th, in honour of the day the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases in 1990.

In 2024, Murdoch University's EDI Team is proud to host 'The Intersections' Panel, bringing together students, academics and researchers of differing intersections to talk about how far we've come in building LGBTIQA+ safety and inclusion and how we make sure we're bringing along everyone in the push for progress. We'll be having discussions at the intersections of LGBTIQA+ and First Nations, Disability, Cultural and Linguistic Diversity and Youth.

Our Panellists:

Shakara Liddelow-Hunt (they/she), Wajarri Yamatji Person, PhD Candidate, Research Assistant on the Walkern Katatdjin (Rainbow Knowledge) Project

Dr Sarah Courtis (she/they), Lecturer and Researcher at Murdoch University and Performing Artist

Isabel Cogumbreiro (she/they), Activist, Model and Student at Murdoch University

Dr Rahul Gairola (he/him), The Krishna Somers Senior Lecturer in English & Postcolonial Literature; IPRC Fellow at Murdoch University

Moderator:

Em Readman, EDI Team, Murdoch University

This event is free to attend for the university community, with staff, students and alumni welcome. We particularly encourage allies of the LGBTIQA+ community to attend to hear and learn from incredible speakers firsthand. The panel will last for approximately 50 minutes, with afternoon tea and refreshments to follow.

We acknowledge the Whadjuk Noongar People as the Traditional Owners of the land on which Murdoch University stands, and pay our respects to Elders both past and present. We acknowledge the enduring connection to land and community, and acknowledge that this always was and always will be Aboriginal Land.
