Identifying Rainforest Plants of the Blackall Range: the families Euphorbiaceae and Putranjivaceae

These families have complex names, but you know some of these species well! They include many of our pioneer species, and stalwarts of the dry rainforest including Macaranga, Mallotus, and Homalanthus. Included in this family are well known weeds including the castor oil plant, and exotics such as the colourful crotons and poinsettias.
Join Hilary Pearl at the Barung Nursery for a two-hour workshop learning the weird and distinctive features of the Euphorbiaceae rainforest plants. What makes them such good colonisers of disturbed places? You will learn nine of our local species, and using their features, we will key some out with the “Rainforest Trees and Shrubs” book and associated App. We will also demonstrate the use of iNaturalist, as an ID tool.
Magnifying lenses, keys, and a worksheet of the nine key species will be supplied. The morning will end with a Euphorbiaceae walk in the Barung Seed Forest.
