Identifying Rainforest Plants of the Blackall Range: the family Moraceae
Event description
White Figs, Strangler figs, Moreton-Bay Figs are magnificent trees on the Blackall Range, and important food sources for our local birds and flying foxes. We have seven types of figs – and it is time to sort them out! They belong to the family Moraceae, which also includes Cockspur Thorn, refuge for little birds, and the Whalebone tree.
So, what are the common features of these plants? How do we distinguish them? Join Hilary Pearl and Rowena Thomas at the Barung Nursery for a two-hour workshop learning about the Moraceae species of our local Blackall Range forests.
We recommend you bring a pen, a torch (or a phone with a torch), and your own eye lens if you have one. Magnifying lenses and eye lenses will be available to use, and worksheets will be supplied as we delve deep into this group of latex plants, with some very weird pollination systems! We will take a photographic tour of iconic fig trees of our town, and the morning will finish with a walk in the Barung Seed Forest.
Participation is limited to 15 places so please book in to attend!
