IDX SYD - Industrial Design Deep Dive: Staying on The Tools

This year IDX will be hosting a series of events focused on collaboration, connection, and education. These events will include workshops, presentations, and panel talks that delve deep into various realms of industrial design. To kick off the year, we are hosting a technical panel discussion on what it means to "stay on the tools" and how the tools we use may change throughout our careers as industrial designers. This discussion will be engaging and relevant for all members of our community.

In celebration of International Women's Day, our panellist will be distinguished industrial designers Sarah Gibson, Florencia Martinez, and Dorcas Chu. 

Join us in the gorgeous studio space of DesignByThem in Alexandria. There’ll be a grazing table, light refreshments (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), and as always, engaging conversation with industrial designers and great friends. 

Speakers

	Sarah Gibson Sarah Gibson is the co-founder and co-designer of DesignByThem. Sarah is an industrial designer with a passion for business and Australian design. Graduating in Industrial Design at UTS, she established DesignByThem in 2007 alongside fellow designer Nicholas Karlovasitis, designing and curating a collection of over 100 products that aim to promote Australian design internationally. Through her work at DesignByThem Sarah has worked with clients such as Google, The Sydney Opera House, Facebook, National Gallery of Victoria and Dion Lee. In 2018, Sarah and Nick were invited by Mass Architecture to design products in Rwanda for the Howard Buffet Foundation. Sarah is a regular speaker on Design and Creative Business and a judge of Good Design Awards 2019. @gibsonkarlo @designbythem
	Florencia Martinez Florencia is a passionate Industrial Designer with almost two decades of experience in designing consumer electronics and homewares for mass production. Her global design journey has taken her to various places such as Milan, Buenos Aires, California, Sydney, and China. Throughout the years, she has specialized in color and material development for mass production, strategic design thinking, design management, and sustainability. Florencia views her work as a reflection of her daily life, values, and dreams. Her focus has always been on how people interact with the objects around them and the narrative behind the design process, while constantly considering the environmental impact and user experience. Currently, Florencia is a Design Manager at Breville/Sage, where she actively contributes to creating the best industrial design team in Australia. Additionally, she works as a seasonal tutor at UNSW, drawing from her industry experience to inspire students and teach creative problem-solving and real-world Industrial Design.
	Dorcas Chu Dorcas is a graduate design engineer at ResMed. Her passion for industrial design was ignited in the design and technology classroom and continued to develop through her time studying a Bachelor of Industrial Design at UNSW. She enjoys the process of understanding the human experience and from there, drawing inspirations to create products that are meaningful, empowering and innovative. In 2022, Dorcas received the Australian Industrial/Product Design Graduate of the Year Award from the Design Institute of Australia, and in the following year, a Good Design Gold Award in the NextGen category for her thesis work on a fully implantable left ventricular assist device for people with end-stage heart failure

We've chosen to coincide this event with International Women's Day. This year International Women's Day's theme is to inspire inclusion: 

"The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion.

When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world.

And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.
