IEU Support Staff Conference- Making a Difference
Event description
What we say and do impacts those around us: our students, our colleagues, our school, our community and the world.
The IEU’s 2024 Support Staff Conference will explore how what we say and do can make an impact – even the smallest actions can be significant. We’ll look at how we can overcome the fear of stepping up and quieten that doubtful “how can anything thing I do make a difference” mind set, and build the confidence and knowledge to become active and engaged in our workplaces and beyond.
Hear the experiences of our keynote speaker, Craig Foster AM, former Socceroo, broadcaster, adjunct professor, author, filmmaker and human rights activist. Following a decorated football career, Craig has become one of Australia’s most respected social justice advocates and a fierce human rights campaigner.
Craig will speak on his personal and professional journey and experiences in becoming a reluctant activist. He will share with us how he shapes change and makes a difference.
Also at the conference, facilitator, trainer and former teacher Beth Berghan will work with participants on finding their voice for advocacy and representation. Having worked in education, training and business development, Beth brings her in-depth of understanding of how to effect change.
The conference will include a panel of our support staff activist members, speaking about their roles within the union, as workplace reps, IEU Council delegates and members of the IEU Executive. The
panel will discuss how their activism impacts the culture within their schools,
especially for support staff and other non-teacher members, and why it is
important for support, professional, operational and administrative staff to
be visible and heard in their workplaces. This will be followed by small group
workshops.
