Description

Synopsis:

Returning to the University of Tasmania, where he completed his Master of Fine Art and Design, Vipoo Srivilasa reflects on the development of his artistic practice from his years as a student in Hobart to the present day.

Through key works, exhibitions and turning points, Vipoo will trace how his visual language has evolved from intimate ceramic figurines to participatory projects. He’ll unpack how he found his artistic voice and built a sustainable practice.

Presented alongside Vipoo Srivilasa: If We’re Being Honest at Plimsoll Gallery, this Art Forum offers an honest reflection on how an artistic practice begins, evolves and continues to grow.

Bio:

Over the past two decades, Vipoo (AUS/THA) has made works that engage with complex questions of queerness, migration and spiritual meaning, using an aesthetic and medium that is accessible, positive and beautiful. His works often explore the dark parts of experience including isolation, loneliness, nostalgia, as well as joy, beauty, and hope in the midst of these struggles. Additionally, Vipoo has developed participatory projects that invite people to be part of his creative process, helping them express themselves through storytelling and clay.

Vipoo has exhibited extensively around the world, including Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Saatchi Gallery, London; Ayala Museum, Philippines; Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan; Nanjing Arts Institute, China and the National Gallery of Thailand. Vipoo was awarded a Master of Fine Art and Design from the University of Tasmania, Hobart in 1999. He lives and works in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia.
