Event description

We’re launching our SHELF collection, 𝑰 𝒇𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒚 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔 on Saturday 4th of March, 1pm - 3pm in the Arts Gen Studio at Footscray Community Arts. 📚

𝑰 𝒇𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒚 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔 is a collection of texts centring Filipino authors and curated by Saluhan Collective for SHELF - a community library and learning site that supports re-gathering of communities in partnership with Arts Gen (@_artsgen).

Inspired by a quote from the classic novel 𝘕𝘰𝘭𝘪 𝘔𝘦 𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘦 (Touch Me Not) by author José Rizal, 𝑰 𝒇𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒚 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔 imagines texts as a form of collective conscience and expression central to the revolutionary thinking of Rizal in articulating Filipino identity. Through a process of co-curation, the library catalogue has been guided by voices from Saluhan’s community and is reflective of current and historical Filipino/x art, culture, literature, theory, and design.

In the spirit of backyard pinoy parties, we’ll also be serving all your fave snacks and hosting a series of indoor and outdoor games for all ages!

When:

• Saturday 4th March, 1pm - 3pm
• SHELF - Arts Gen Studio, Footscray Community Arts, 45 Moreland St, Footscray, Melbourne
• Tickets are free - all are welcome!

Established in 2019, Saluhan Collective was created to establish a network between creatives in Australia and the Philippines and has since expanded to include collaborative projects in arts and community development.

SHELF is a community library and learning site that supports the gathering of communities through a series of co-curated collections. Collections include new and existing cultural resources (books, magazines, podcasts, games ect) that promote creativity and health and wellbeing, as well as original resources created by communities.

Through collective-curatorship SHELF looks to support multilingual approaches to community health by creating sites outside of the home that encourage the circulation of stories, health messaging and information more widely.

Arts Gen works with collectives of local community members and artists to establish the collections, create resources, and host public programming in culturally specific and responsive ways.

SHELF is a site for intergenerational and intercultural expression and learning through conversation, knowledge-sharing, and artmaking for community by community.
