About Psychologist Marina Bailey

Marina Bailey is a registered Psychologist, Member of the Australian Psychological Society, and Board Approved Supervisor with over 30 years’ experience. Since graduating from the University of Sydney in 1986, she has worked extensively with families, educators, and health professionals in Australia and internationally, specialising in autism, positive behaviour support, trauma, and child and family resilience. A strong advocate for person- and family-centred practice, Marina is widely recognised for her work in fostering authentic inclusion, delivering workshops and capacity building programs, and consulting to organisations.

About the Lecture

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is emotional resilience – the power to "ride through" adversity. But how can we help children cultivate skills in this area to build grit and tenacity, confidence and self-esteem and overall good mental health? Psychologist Marina Bailey has more than 30 years' experience working in schools to build emotional resilience, so that children can transition into future school settings with ease and better manage the normal ups and downs of life inside and outside school.

This workshop is designed to help parents of young children build their children's emotional resilience, so they can transition into future school settings with ease and better manage the normal ups and downs of school life. The workshop will highlight the skills associated with resilience and the importance of building strong and secure child/parent connection, social and emotional skills and having opportunities to practice and strengthen these skills so they act as protective factors later in life. These skills are critical to building grit and tenacity, confidence and self – esteem and good mental health. The workshop will also outline:

Establishing a strong secure connection with your child
The importance of communication, social and emotional regulation skills
Setting limits
Supporting Behaviour, especially when children are behaving in a way we don’t like
Managing screen time, sleep and downtime
Supporting emotional regulation so they can “lean into discomfort” and do challenging things when needed
Working in partnership with teachers
