    Event description

Join us at the IMA, Friday 17 September as we launch IMA LIVE: The Future is First Nations, an up-late event curated by IMA First Nations public program coordinators Tallara Gray and Adam Ford.

A proposition, an alternative, a reimagining, and a celebration: The Future is First Nations is but a window through which we can imagine a different future, one where First Nations peoples can shape from creativity the freedom to celebrate themselves and each other—with sovereignty, agency, and connection to Country.

Across the evening experience a series of pop-up activations and performances presented with deadly artists and creatives, including DJ Dameeeela, Hannah Donnelly, Jarra Karalinar Steel, Talia Donoghue, Nicholas Currie, Blak Seed, and Maringla handcrafted jewellery.

Conceived in response to Kokatha/Nukunu artist Yhonnie Scarce’s exhibition, Missile Park, IMA LIVE: First Nations Futures night proposes an alternative to the dark histories explored in Scarce’s work. In Missile Park, painful and traumatic histories are invoked and memorialised. Colonial pasts seep into the present and perhaps even the future, although this is yet to be known. It is from the vantage point of an uncertain future that IMA LIVE: The Future is First Nations was imagined.
