Imagining Exhibitions: An Intro to Curating

Class Description: Imagining Exhibitions provides an introduction to the practical methods and creative decisions involved in making exhibitions. Through exhibition visits, discussion, and hands-on experimentation, students will learn how curators shape meaning through selection, arrangement, display, and storytelling. Together, the class will explore museums, artist-run spaces, archives, and alternative exhibition models while developing individual curatorial ideas. The course culminates in a co-curated exhibition at KCAI Gallery--open to the public following the course. 

No previous experience required. Designed for artists, writers, educators, and anyone curious about exhibitions, the course approaches curating as both a practical discipline and a creative medium.
*Sessions will include site visits to local museums, nonprofits, and studios.

Instructor: Chelsea Perry-Kaufman is a curator and arts facilitator with experience spanning private collections, public art, commercial galleries, nonprofit arts organizations, and higher education institutions; from San Francisco to New York. Throughout her career, Chelsea has led initiatives that strengthen cross-community engagement and support both emerging and established artists alike including; facilitating public installations, organizing civic art policies, and coordinating free creative workshops for rural communities.
As an educator, her courses focus on the practical and conceptual aspects of exhibition-making; from curatorial planning to installation, audience engagement, collaborative creative processes, and exploring alternative exhibition models. Chelsea is passionate about cultivating accessible creative opportunities and helping emerging creatives develop practical tools for resilient, enduring, careers. She is currently located in Kansas City.

Supplies: The instructor will contact registered students directly regarding materials and supplies.

Parking: Parking is available in any of the (NON-RESERVED) KCAI parking lot spaces across campus. RESERVED spaces are available after 5pm on the weekdays and all day on the weekends. There is also available street parking surrounding KCAI campus. 

Refund: Registered participants can receive refunds to the original payment method (Studio Fee minus Humanitix Fee) up to 14 days before the first class.
