What if we told you that your next favourite K-Drama is based on a book translated by ANU students? Join us to discover the exciting journey behind The Trunk by Kim Ryeoryeong, translated by the KoLab.

In July 2023, a group of 13 students from across Australia, including several from ANU, met online to begin a 12-week translation workshop led by Dr Adam Zulawnik (University of Melbourne) and Dr Paik Yonjae (CHL, ANU). Together, the group worked on translating 트렁크, a satirical feminist thriller that had already been picked up for a Netflix TV series starring Gong Yu and Seo Hyun-jin. After several months of work, an English manuscript of the book was ready and, after a few more, the manuscript was picked up by HarperCollins. Set to be released in November this year, the book is proof of the exciting results cross-institutional collaboration, practice-based learning, and student talent can produce.

This event will be an opportunity to learn about the book and hear first-hand from workshop participants about their experiences with translation. To add to the excitement, another workshop is being held in 2024 to learn more about literary translation, this time through Kim Yudam's 이완의 자세. Hear all about it from one of this year's instructors, PhD candidate Aditi Dubey (SLLL, ANU).
