Sydney’s persistent issues are worse than ever, including housing affordability, rising homelessness, and the ever-rising cost of living. Racism and discrimination continue to be significant social problems in Australia, impacting individuals and communities from diverse cultural backgrounds. Suicide remains the leading cause of death among young Australians.

We've asked our experts to help us reimagine the Sydney we want to see and look at where the best philanthropic investments can be made to make Sydney more equitable.

Our panel will be facilitated by Sharon Levy, Partner at Bartier Perry and Founding Chair of The Haven – Nepean Women’s Shelter. Sharon has over 20 years’ experience in general commercial disputes, and a particular expertise in building and construction. Sharon is also the Founding Chair of The Haven – Nepean Women’s Shelter, a not-for-profit organisation focused on supporting women through domestic violence and homelessness in Western Sydney. Sharon volunteers her skills and time with the Shelter and her community in undertaking this valuable work. The Haven was also the recipient of one of 2023 Impact100 Sydney Grants!

Dr Rhonda Itaoui, Director of the Centre for Western Sydney at the University of Western Sydney. Dr Rhonda Itaoui is a human geographer and social research interested in geographies of diversity and multiculturalism in urban spaces. Rhonda is passionate about using research as a tool to advocate for the needs and aspirations of underrepresented and disadvantaged communities through collaboration and meaningful engagement.

Lucinda Brogden AM, Chair, Diabetes Australia Research Program; Director, Australian Unity Limited; Director, Be Kind Sydney; Director, Corporate Mental Health Alliance Australia; Director, National Film and Sound Archive; and Founder & Patron, Sydney Women’s Fund. Lucy has over 30 years’ commercial experience and a strong commitment to helping others. Her primary areas of focus are issues facing Women and Girls and Mental Health and Wellbeing. She takes an evidenced based approach to problem solving and social investment.

Matt Levinson, Head of Corporate Affairs, Cultural Policy Lead, Committee for Sydney. Matt is a communication strategist and social change leader with senior experience in government, media and purpose organisations. At the Committee for Sydney, he leads communication, corporate affairs and cultural policy. He is also a member of the NSW Government’s 24 Hour Economy Advisory Group, and a Board Director for creative not-for-profit 107 Projects.
