Imperial Briefs - A Pantomime by Jane Hille

Event description

This June, Swan Christian College’s theatre company Fenceline Theatre is presenting an unforgettable family-friendly pantomime packed with laughter and merriment! Imperial Briefs is based on the classic fairy tale, The Emperor’s New Clothes, and follows the adventures of two mischievous criminals named Itchy and Scratchy. These two unlikely heroes have hatched a brilliant plan to rid the imperial highness of his vast wealth by duping him with their fake ‘Imaginary Arts’ career.

Imperial Briefs is bound to leave an impression with its witty humour and experienced actors, and is sure to be a hit with both adults and kids. Award-winning playwright, Jane Hille says, “The best thing about pantomime is the audience interaction, so there’s lots of opportunities to yell out responses, to hiss and boo the villains and to sing catchy songs.”

Pantomime is a genre of theatre that involves slapstick and comedy; singing and dancing; as well as plots and characters most often derived from folklore, fairy tales, or fables.

Hille enjoyed the writing process: “Writing a modern twist on a well know fable is always fun. The issues of pride and vanity that Hans Christian Andersen wrote about more than a hundred years ago are still relevant.”

Andrew Matthews, known for his theatrical and TV performances, will take on the role of the Imperial Highness in the upcoming production. He is also the screen writer of the Hollywood film, The Least of These, based on the true story of Graham Staines, an Australian missionary who helped lepers in India, starring Stephen Baldwin. Matthews encourages families to enjoy the pantomime: “Sometimes we all just need a good laugh, and that’s what Jane Hille is providing. You have to come to pantomime with an ‘anything goes’ attitude, be ready to laugh at silliness and go along with the show.”

The event is family-friendly and all ages are welcome! Imperial Briefs will be held in the Maali Mia Theatre at Swan Christian College in Middle Swan. The show will be running on 28 & 29 of June from 7:00pm – 8:15pm. Tickets can be purchased online for either $15 for adults or $10 for kids under 18.
