a range of strategies for addressing gaps in student knowledge, correcting common misconceptions, reducing maths anxiety, and offering personalised learning pathways for each student in mixed-ability classrooms

Meet the author and presenter

Anne Finlay
Former Head of Mathematics
St Michael’s College, Adelaide

Anne’s entered the teaching profession in 1995 as Mathematics and Science at Dripstone High School in Darwin, NT, after a successful career as a technical assistant with the Division of Forest Research and Fuel Geoscience Unit of the CSIRO.

During her time in Darwin, Anne was a moderator and exam writer for the Northern Territory Department of Education, as well a member of the National Benchmarking panel.

In 1999, Anne accepted a position as Mathematics teacher at De La Salle College in Ashfield, NSW, and became Head of Mathematics in 2002. During this time, she taught Years 7–12 Mathematics (including Year 12 Extension 1) and was also involved in the NSW Middle-years Numeracy Research Project.

In 2013, Anne relocated to South Australia to take on a new role as Head of Mathematics at St Michael’s College in Adelaide. In 2023, after 10 years at the College – and having worked as moderator and assessor for Year 12 Essential Maths – Anne retired from teaching.

In retirement, Anne is enjoying developing new interests and indulging her love of travel.
