Event description

The Art of Storytelling: A One-Day Symposium

Join us for a dynamic day of ideas, creativity, and conversation as we delve into the art of storytelling in this event presented in conjunction with Jennifer Fyfe’s exhibition Descript. Through a diverse lineup of speakers and discussions, this symposium will explore the many ways stories shape our world - from visual and literary narratives to the stories embedded in our bodies, minds, and cultures - and how artists working from sustainability to neuroscience use storytelling in their work.

The Symposium takes place in the VAS Gallery as part of Imprint, a four-week program that invites audiences to experience storytelling through paint, print, and performance with a variety of exhibitions, events, and workshops. At the heart of the program is the major exhibition, descript by Jennifer Fyfe. Spanning the upper galleries at VAS throughout the four-week imprint event, Fyfe presents a body of work created over five years. These artworks are a combination of vintage texts, oil paintings and community stories told in oil paint, ink, and braille. Displayed with accessibility in mind, the artworks are complemented by two installations designed to inspire visitor interaction and discussion.

Keynote speaker Charli English will examine sustainable art practices, while neuroscientist, artist and advocate Tanya Duckworth will uncover the deep connections between creativity and the brain. Other featured speakers include Megan-Jane Johnstone AO, tattoo artist Sammi Edney, and more. The day will conclude with a special recital presentation of Portraits in Song by Ensemble Creatus, weaving together music and storytelling in a fitting finale. Whether you’re an artist, writer, performer, or simply passionate about the power of stories, this symposium offers a unique opportunity to connect with fellow creatives and expand your perspective on storytelling’s limitless possibilities.

This all day events includes lunch and light refreshments.
