ABOUT RAFAEL KARLEN:
Rafael Karlen is an ARIA-Nominated composer, saxophonist, and arranger based in Sydney. He has continued to build a reputation as one of the more creative, exciting and surprising musicians on the Australian music scene. Rafael’s music has been performed by small jazz groups, rock and pop ensembles, big bands through to chamber orchestras, choirs, and string quartets. He has performed throughout Australia and New Zealand, and in Canada, Cambodia, England, Scotland and Sweden.

Rafael has received many awards and accolades including a Winston Churchill Fellowship to travel to USA, England, Denmark, Norway, Germany and Holland to visit many of the world’s leading contemporary composers/arrangers, performers and ensembles. He was awarded the prestigious Prelude Residency and was the 2018 Composer in Residence at the Peggy Glanville-Hicks House in Sydney allowing him to focus on producing new work over the course of 12 months. He has been nominated for several Freedman Fellowships, finalist in several Jazz Bell Award categories, and received an Australian Art Music Award for Excellence with the Berardi/Foran/Karlen Trio.

Refund policy

If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms and are unable to attend after having purchased a ticket, please contact the JMI office (07) 3216 1110 or email play@jazz.qld.edu.au) as soon as possible during business hours (10AM-4PM) to let us know you won’t be able to attend. A full refund will be given if we are contacted prior to a performance. Refunds will not be processed if we are contacted after the gig.
