More about the topic

Corrosion is a global problem affecting industry. It can lead to structural failure, loss of containment, environmental damage, risk to personnel, and loss of public confidence.

The global cost of corrosion is estimated to be US$2.5 trillion, which is equivalent to 3.4% of the global GDP. These costs typically do not consider production downtime, safety, and environmental impacts from loss of containment and greenhouse gas emissions from the production of steel necessary for the substitution of rusted metal and damaged coatings.

Leading our CIWG Rust Never Sleeps: Corrosion Control in the Age of Sustainability is a presentation that has been specifically developed to address the world of material degradation and its impact on structural integrity. This talk will shed light on the often overlooked, yet critical, issue of structural corrosion, exploring some of the most persistent mechanisms and their effects, and the innovative solutions being developed to combat it.

Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how maintaining structural integrity can enhance safety, improve efficiency, and ultimately contribute to a more sustainable future.

Join us for this CIWG as we discuss the more prevalent mechanisms of corrosion and discover how to turn this silent problem into an opportunity for advancement and growth.

Some of the topics discussed in this presentation include:

  • Steel and concrete degradation and remediation.
  • Coatings and cathodic protection.
  • Microbiologically influenced corrosion and its mitigation.
  • Corrosion mitigation and sustainability through design.
  • Condition Monitoring and Automation Solutions.

Giles Harrison
Giles Harrison - Co-Founder and Managing Director

As a corrosion consultant with over two decades of experience, Giles is actively involved in various corrosion consulting tasks. These include failure analysis investigations, plant inspections, developing corrosion mitigation strategies, including design and installation of CP systems, aiding in material selection for projects, as well as reviewing and overseeing concrete and structural remedial activities.

Recently, he has worked to develop and implement a systematic and integrated RBI process for fixed plant assets for numerous asset owners across the southern hemisphere.

More recently he is leading initiatives to optimise process plant assets in sustainable ways. His work extends to developing and implementing systematic sustainability measures for a range of industries, ensuring long-term environmental and operational benefits.
