A funny, poetic solo storytelling performance, In a City, Near a Forest , finds Kemi Oloruntobi, mid-fieldwork, struck by how much her grandmother's folktales and garden chores shaped her path to becoming an internationally working agroforester. She reaches back: her Lagos childhood, holidays at her grandmother's village, and the journey between these two worlds that has run through her life ever since. Four folktales are woven through the science like roots through soil. Magical creatures and mycorrhizal networks belong in the same breath; childhood wonder and hard-won insight turn out to be related — though not without cost. Knowing and quietly aching.
