The light, floating quality in early Shojo manga is often described through the Japanese onomatopoeia ’hirahira’, a term that refers to the gentle, wavering motion of thin objects such as butterfly wings, falling petals, or flickering light. Hirahira conveys an ineffable quality, allowing emotion to unfold, rather than be explained. Drawing from this type of visual language, 'IN BLOOM' challenges artists to experiment on how their practice might change beyond the screen or page as it takes on space, weight, texture, and time.
Celebrate with us on opening night, which takes place on Friday, 14th of August from 6-8pm. Some of the local artists involved in the exhibition will also be attending this special evening, which includes free drinks, a special polaroid wall, and an intimate love letter activity! The person who writes the most hirahira letter will bring home the new pink edition of the Artist 12 3rd drawing tablet, sponsored by XP-Pen.
Otherwise, you can take your time to see the show over the weekend if you prefer something a little quieter with the sunlight flickering against the walls of beautiful artworks.
**A very limited number of merchandise from some of these artists will also be available for purchase throughout the show. We cannot reserve products as we operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
This exhibition continues to build into PANKEKI’s vision to reconstruct the existing perceptions in Australia towards this form of playful, stylised flat art inspired by pop culture.
