In conversation: Jemima Wyman and Katherine Dionysius

Join curator Katherine Dionysius in conversation with artist Jemima Wyman as they delve into Deep Surface—the exhibition and monograph—and Wyman’s survey show capturing 30 years of creative practice. This discussion explores Wyman's politically charged investigations into camouflage, collective organizing, democracy, and dissent, tracing the evolution of her practice from the mid-1990s to today.

Jemima Wyman is a Palawa woman who lives and works in Los Angeles. Wyman’s practice focuses on visual resistance used in global protest. Wyman has been exhibiting in Australia and internationally since 1996. Recent solo exhibitions include Sullivan + Strumpf, Australia (2024,2023,2021, 2019) and Commonwealth and Council, LA (2022, 2018). The artist was awarded the Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award (2025) and the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs Master Artist Grant (2024). She has exhibited in group exhibitions at Frieze No. 9 Cork Street, London and ArtCenter College of Design, Los Angeles. Wyman’s work is held in collections, including the Whitney Museum of Contemporary Art New York, National Gallery of Australia and the 21st Century Museum of Art, Japan.

Katherine Dionysius is a curator, Katherine Dionysius writer and editor. She has worked in the curatorial team at QUT Galleries and Museums for over thirteen years, delivering several survey exhibitions and accompanying publications, including Ken + Julia Yonetani: To Be Human (2022), Anne Wallace: Strange Ways (2019), and Dadang Christanto: 1965 (2015). From 2013 to 2018, she coordinated exhibitions, publications and programs for 89plus at MoMA PS1 (New York), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Serpentine Galleries (London), Museo Jumex (Mexico City), The LUMA Foundation (Zurich), Google Arts & Culture (Paris), Art Basel (Hong Kong and Miami), and others. Katherine has curated public art projects for Brisbane City Council, served on the board at Outer Space, and written for Kaleidoscope, Art + Australia, Eyeline, Metro Arts and Boxcopy.
