Early Childhood Australia, South Australia, The Early Childhood Organisation of South Australia, Nature Play SA and the Preschool Directors Association of South Australia are proud to launch another collaborative project: Reclaiming What Matters in Early Childhood.

Over the course of the collaborative project that will extend into 2023, we are coming together to plan a series of online professional learning sessions that will have a strong focus on the five domains of child development from the Australian Early Development Census:

• physical health and wellbeing

• social competence

• emotional maturity

• language and cognitive skills (school-based)

• communication skills and general knowledge.

Come and join us for a thought provoking session with Dr Naomi Fisher on self-directed education and learning and how children can take control of their own learning. Naomi is a clinical psychologist from Hove in the United Kingdom and works as a therapist, supervisor and writer. Access some of Naomi’s work in the link above.

Dr Fisher has written many articles and is the author of Changing Our Minds: How children can take control of their own learning.

"Dr Naomi Fisher is a Clinical Psychologist who has worked with many children who are unhappy at school, and for whom she says school is damaging. She has written many articles (see further reading below) and is the author of Changing Our Minds: How children can take control of their own learning.

As a psychologist, it makes no sense to her that we should control children in the name of education. She says that it makes learning and motivation unnecessarily difficult and takes the power away from children and young people. She says that there is evidence that education doesn’t have to be so restrictive, that learning works best when children have choices and that it’s important not to ignore this evidence" (Progressive Education, 2022).
