Micaela is an Australian-Palestinian writer and educator living on unceded Wurundjeri Country. Her essays, poetry and commentary have appeared in Cordite, Meanjin, Overland and Sydney Review of Books, among others. Her first book, Find Me at the Jaffa Gate: An encyclopaedia of a Palestinian family (NewSouth Publishing), was the winner of the 2026 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards for Nonfiction and the 2026 NSW Literary Award for New Writing.
Guiding the conversation will be Kate MacNeill, a Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne, where she was an academic teacher and researcher for over 20 years. Kate is part of Eyes on Palestine (Aireys Inlet), a group screening films about contemporary and historic Palestine.

Micaela Sahhar is an Australian-Palestinian writer and educator living on unceded Wurundjeri Country. Her essays, poetry and commentary have appeared in Cordite, Meanjin, Overland and Sydney Review of Books, among others. Her first book, Find Me at the Jaffa Gate: An encyclopaedia of a Palestinian family (NewSouth Publishing), was the winner of the 2026 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards for Nonfiction and the 2026 NSW Literary Award for New Writing; it was shortlisted for the 2026 National Biography Award, the Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-Fiction (NSW), the Multicultural NSW Award, the Queensland Literary Award for Nonfiction, and long-listed for the 2026 Stella Prize.
Kate MacNeill
Kate MacNeill is a Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne, where she was an academic teacher and researcher for over 20 years. Once a lawyer, with a PhD in art history, Kate’s ongoing research is at the intersection of law and the arts. She has published widely on censorship and intellectual property, and co-edited books on ethics and creative practices, and working conditions in the visual arts. Kate is part of Eyes on Palestine (Aireys Inlet), a group screening films about contemporary and historic Palestine.
