In Dialogue: Online Freedom or Safety?
Event description
About the event
The Youth Pride Network is providing an opportunity for tech savvy and digitally native LGBTIQA+ young people to reflect on their user experience on social media, then develop and present actionable strategies to enhance the online space in front of a panel of high profile stakeholders in the sector!
Zooming in on the socio-ethical implications of social media, this program aims to provide a timely and urgent exploration of the tension between safeguarding vulnerable demographics, specifically queer young people from the growing concerns of harassment, polarisation, and misinformation - while still respecting the necessity of individual liberty and freedom of expression
Structure
The program consists of three main sessions:
Session 1 – TechTalk: Understanding the Ethics and Regulations of Social Media 📈🏛️
An introductory presentation deliver by an expert in social media regulation to equip participants with contexts.
Session 2 - Co-design: Crafting Youth-led Solutions 🔧⚖️
Working in smaller groups, participants reflect on their user experience online, identifying the problems and co-design recommendations for a specific sector:
- Government & public institutions
- Big Tech & private sector
- Non-profit, community and civil societies
The principles of ‘Safety by Design’ which were pioneered by the eSafety Commissioner of Australia will be the guiding values for the participants in co-designing the strategies.
Session 3 - Impact Roundtable: Youth Proposals and Sector Insights 🎤💥
Each group have the unique opportunity to present their co-design strategies to a panel of key stakeholders in the online safety sector. The panellists in return will provide valuable feedback, insights, and potential commitments to adopt these recommendations.
