Communities at Work's Galilee School will be hosting a presentation by Mental Health First Aid Australia on 17 March 2022, as part of our "In The Know: Information Series" and all parents, carers, and teachers are encouraged to attend. The topic of the session will be Conversations about Non-Suicidal Self-Injury.

Attend the session to learn how to assist someone who is engaging in self-injury.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

TIME: 5 pm to 9:15 pm, with a 15-minute break at 7 pm for dinner.

This is a 4-hour workshop that can be attended by any adult. We encourage staff and clients of Communities at Work's Galilee School and the broader organisation to attend.

The Mental Health First Aid Conversations About Non-Suicidal Self-Injury course will teach you how to identify, approach, and support someone who is engaging in self-injury by using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan. You will also have the opportunity to practise your new skills in a safe environment.

The term ‘non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) describes a behaviour where a person
deliberately or purposefully hurts themselves. It is used to refer to self-injury that is not intended to result in death. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience
of mental health problems and professionals.

Note: This course is not a therapy or support group.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN AT THE WORKSHOP

Why people engage in self-injury
How to talk to someone about their self-injury
How to help the person stay safe
How to connect someone to appropriate professional help
How to assess for suicidal thoughts and behaviours

WHY ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP

Evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with
improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and
appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first
aid to individuals with mental illness. It is also associated with
decreased stigma and an increase in the help provided.

About In The Know Information Series

Communities at Work's Galilee School is pleased to launch 'In The Know', an information series for parents and guardians, aimed at addressing and promoting positive messages in the community, focused around the mental and social wellbeing of young people.

The initiative is an attempt by our school to exercise greater positive influence in the lives of young people over what affects them outside the school environment. The information series hopes to provide support to parents and guardians to better understand and tackle contemporary challenges affecting the young people in their care.

It demonstrates our commitment to helping young people from the school gain an understanding of society, accesses positive role models, and form positive relationships outside the school setting.

The Mental Health First Aid session is the second in Galilee School's "In The Know" information series for Parents and Guardians of the school.

While ticketing priority will be given to Galilee School's parents and guardians, if we have enough places remaining, limited spots may be opened to other Communities at Work's clients and staff.
