In The Weeds: Nurturing Community through Landcare - Author talk with Dr Sonia Graham
Description
If you’ve ever been frustrated by weeds - either erupting into your garden, overgrowing your favourite reserve, or popping up in your paddock, this author talk is for you! Join Associate Professor Sonia Graham from the University of Wollongong to hear about her recently published book 'In the Weeds: Nurturing Community through Landcare.' Sonia shares stories of communities who work together to control weeds, and how local groups achieve positive environmental change and forge social networks to effectively respond to bushfires, floods and changing conditions.
With more than 20 years of research experience, Sonia has dedicated her career to understanding the social values, relationships and motivations that drive collective environmental action. Her new book 'In the Weeds' draws on her recent PhD and shares experiences from seven long-standing Landcare groups across south-east NSW, which are taking on a range of weeds from privet, to lantana and serrated tussock. The talk will explore why working together is often the key to tackling complex weed problems, as well as what motivates volunteers and landholders to stay engaged over decades, and the practical ingredients needed to build and maintain effective community groups - which often involves some favourite recipes, cake and a cuppa!
Copies of Sonia's book will be available to purchase on the day, and this is a chance to meet the author and discover how we can rethink weeds from being pesky and pervasive, to a problem that can be solved together.
This event is part of a Landcare Library talks series in collaboration with Upper Shoalhaven Landcare Council and Queanbeyan-Palerang Libraries.
