Inclusion Institute: Down Syndrome and Digestive Health
Event description
Down Syndrome and Digestive Health
Problems with the digestive system or gastrointestinal disorders are more common in people with Down Syndrome than the general population. The most common digestive problems are constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The increased occurrence of digestive problems in Down Syndrome is poorly understood. Low muscle tone and differences in nervous system activity are usually given as the explanation. Despite this lack of understanding, there are some simple diet and lifestyle changes that everyone can make to improve their digestive function. Some of these changes may be even more important for people with Down Syndrome. In this talk, Nicky will give some simple and practical ideas for that may help with digestive issues in people with Down Syndrome. Nicky will focus on foods to add, rather than foods to take away.
