    Inclusive education is a concept that all children are included in education for the benefit of all. The research shows it works, but it is not without its challenges. What exactly does inclusive education mean? What are the guiding principles? What are the practical strategies and how will I have time to implement them? How do you get the whole school community involved? 

    In this Masterclass, education experts Elizabeth Salles, Nicole Torres and Dr Matt Capp provide frameworks that really do work and that benefit all students, while supporting neurodivergent and Autistic students in particular. It ensures educators can practice inclusive education in the classroom without the need to re-design the curriculum to fit individual students and you have the opportunity to bring work units or tasks along to explore how they can apply inclusive teaching strategies.

    Masterclass Outline

    Part 1: Developing inclusive classrooms through Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

    Rather than a list of pedagogical strategies, UDL is a framework for thinking about the planning, teaching and assessments cycle, and is a proactive approach to supporting students with disability and diverse learning needs to access the approved curriculum. It focuses on eliminating barriers through initial designs that consider the needs of diverse people, rather than overcoming barriers later through individual adaptation (Rose et al., 2006; Doabler et al., 2015; Novak & Thibodeau, 2016). 

    Key concepts include:

    • Developing an inclusive curriculum
    • Identifying the strengths and functional impacts of all students within your classroom
    • Exploring the UDL framework
    • Applying the UDL framework to your students’ strengths and functional impacts

    Part 2: Exploring inclusive practices and strategies to supporting neurodivergent learners

    Key concepts include:

    • Language and communication (literal not figurative)
    • Introduction to sensory needs – includes identification and strategies to manage
    • Using inclusionED to support learners
    • Planning session
