For a workshop Maximising Learning Growth in Mathematics;

This presentation explores how Professor Jo Boaler’s research can support students with Down Syndrome in inclusive maths classrooms. Boaler’s emphasis on growth mindset, visual learning, and engaging tasks will be linked with strategies for accessible, high-quality instruction.

We’ll also examine explore the impacts of cognitive load on students with additional needs.

Practical approaches—including hands-on materials, visual scaffolds, real-world contexts, and collaborative learning—will be shared, along with planning tips and common pitfalls.

Finally, we’ll explore how AI tools can help teachers design and differentiate maths learning more effectively.

Educators will leave with evidence-based strategies and tools to help all students, especially those with Down Syndrome, thrive in mathematics.

Ben Ticehurst is the Principal of St Matthew's Catholic Primary School in Windsor, Sydney. With over 25 years in Catholic education, Ben has led in both primary and secondary settings across a range of leadership roles, including Principal, Assistant Principal and Leader of Learning (Mathematics).

Ben is committed to creating learning environments that inspire enthusiasm, growth, and academic excellence. He works closely with teachers to embed best practices and foster a whole-school approach to learning, grounded in research.

His leadership centres on nurturing “strong minds and gentle hearts,” placing individual student growth at the core of his educational vision
