Inclusive Investigations: Trauma-informed, Neurodiverse and Culturally Responsive Investigations

Course Overview

Every person who participates in a workplace investigation brings their own lived experience shaped by cultural background and potentially by trauma and neurological differences.

This practical half-day workshop equips internal investigators with awareness, language and practical tools to conduct workplace investigations through a trauma-informed, neuroinclusive and culturally responsive lens - without compromising procedural fairness, objectivity or the integrity of the process.

Investigators are not required to be clinicians, neurodiversity specialists, or cultural experts; however, they must approach every investigation with an informed awareness of how their engagement with participants influences not only the reliability of the evidence, but also trust in the process and the wellbeing of those involved. This person-centred approach to investigations is no longer considered best-practice, but an expected practice under many Australian safety and industry codes and regulations.

What Makes This Workshop Unique

This workshop offers participants a rare opportunity to learn directly from two expert perspectives in the one room - a clinical subject matter expert and a senior workplace investigator.

We are pleased to be joined by Bernie Scully, Director and Psychologist at YES Psychology & Consulting. Bernie has worked extensively at the extremes of human wellbeing. With clinical expertise in PTSD and Trauma within organisations, Bernie has developed and supported organisations’ ability to self-assess and utilise the power of psychology to not only support its people during critical times but to bounce back, grow and thrive.

Our clinical expert brings specialist knowledge in the neurobiology of trauma-informed approaches, and our senior workplace investigator, Caroline O’Connor, then bridges that clinical insight into practical investigative application, translating theory into the real-world decisions, language and adjustments investigators make every day.

Together, these two lenses, clinical and investigative, give participants a richer, more complete skillset for navigating the complex intersection of trauma, culture and neurodiversity in workplace investigations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Understand the neurobiology of trauma, culture and neurodiversity as explained by a clinical expert - and why this knowledge matters in an investigative context
Identify the key concepts of trauma, neurodiversity and what culture means as they apply in a workplace investigation context.
Recognise how trauma responses, neurological differences and cultural background can influence a participant’s behaviour, communication and engagement during an investigation.
Apply practical, inclusive adjustments to investigative processes, from initial contact through to interview and findings, without compromising procedural fairness.
Balance empathy and objectivity throughout every stage of the investigation.
Avoid common investigator errors that can inadvertently re-traumatise, exclude or disadvantage participants.
Learn through practical examples and scenarios.

This workshop is a useful foundational start for internal investigators to learn these concepts and understand how they apply in their everyday investigations.

Takeaways

Participants leave with scripted examples to assist with conducting inclusive interviews and examples of how to apply a trauma, neurodiverse and culturally aware lens over each stage of the investigation.
