Inclusive Music-Making Through Body Movement and Vibration​

Everyone is welcome to experience music in a new way. No musical background, hearing ability, or prior experience is required.

This interactive installation invites participants to explore music through body movement, vibration, and visualisation in a relaxed and inclusive environment. Whether you are hearing, Deaf, hard of hearing, or simply curious about alternative ways of experiencing music, you are encouraged to participate at your own pace.

Using AirSticks, motion-based musical instruments developed by Dr. Alon Ilsar, participants will discover how natural body movements can create and shape live music in real time. As you move, your gestures are transformed into sound, while visualisations and vibrations provide additional ways to experience and connect with music. If you cannot hear, you can still experience music through vibration and visual feedback, and create sound through movement. There is no right or wrong way to participate. This is an opportunity to experiment, play, and express yourself through your body.

Throughout the event, you will make music with other participants through AirSticks rather than just watching a performance. You can join individually, with friends, or simply observe before deciding to take part.

This installation is part of past and ongoing Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research involving Monash University, the University of Technology Sydney, and the University of New South Wales. The research explores how emerging technologies can make music-making more accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for people with diverse sensory experiences. Co-designed with people with lived experience, the project demonstrates how technology can expand opportunities for creativity, participation, and social connection through music.
