There is a significant difference between the terms 'equality' and 'equity'. Equality means treating everyone the same while equity means providing everyone with what they need to be successful. But not everyone starts at the same place or has the same needs. We will discuss ways to assist your class to understand why some students need adjustments to the curriculum and others do not. As Audrey Lorde, the civil rights activist said, “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognise, accept, and celebrate those differences.”

Presenter:

Dr Leanne Longfellow is a former teacher and currently supports teachers to provide inclusive classrooms as well as assisting with parental advocacy. She is also a parent of a young adult with disabilities. She has presented at Australian and international educational conferences, taught in a university context and completed her doctoral research on the education of students with disability at UniSA in 2018.
