There is increasing pressure for researchers and policy makers to ‘meaningfully engage’ with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities in any practices involving ‘Indigenous data’ (e.g., The AIATSIS Code of Ethics – 2020; United Nations Declaration for the Right of Indigenous Peoples – 2007). Whilst Indigenous peoples have too often been isolated from the language, control and production of data at community, state and national levels, the emergence of Indigenous Data Sovereignty movements around the globe has seen research ‘engagement’ with Indigenous peoples shift drastically from passive participation to active Indigenous governance. From the lenses' of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scholars, this symposium will focus on some of the more recent advances in Indigenous Data Sovereignty. It will include: Dr Jacob Prehn who will outline Australia’s first Indigenous Data Sovereignty communique developed at the Inaugural Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Indigenous Data Sovereignty Summit; Professor Maggie Walter who will detail the C.A.R.E. Principles (a foundational document by the Global Indigenous Data Alliance to inform the development of Indigenous Data Governance); Dr Cassandra Price who will detail how Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles can be applied to Government data to support and enhance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples collective wellbeing; and Professor Gawaian Bodkin-Andrews who will discuss the Indigenous Data Sovereignty implications with regards to the recent revisions of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification system to include 2-digit Indigenous Studies codes.
