About the lecture

Deceptive uses of digital media and technology have become woven into the fabric of business, society, and media. Artificial Intelligence (AI) "slop" is everywhere. Newspapers are publishing it, lawyers and judges have cited it as case law, and social media platforms are covered in it. As powerful people, companies and institutions embrace AI and other online manipulation tactics – how are we supposed to know if what we're seeing is real or entirely fabricated?

Join award-winning journalist and leading expert on online disinformation, Craig Silverman, as he explores how platforms and tech giants have failed to implement meaningful oversight on AI technology and its use. Through real-world examples and case studies, he'll unpack the tactics being used, who and what are driving them, and the risks they pose to trust and informed public debate.

In a world where fake content is becoming indistinguishable from reality, what does this new media landscape demand of journalists, media organisations and audiences – and how do we protect our ability to know what, and who, to trust?

This lecture is part of the Arthur Norman Smith Lecture in Journalism series. Holding a unique place in Australia's cultural history, the series commemorates Arthur Norman Smith, founder of the Australian Journalists' Association. Thanks to a generous gift from the Smith family, the lecture is presented each year by a leading authority on an aspect of journalism.
