This session is a practical presentation, demonstration and discussion in how to approach preparing art objects for travel and storage –  attendees areΒ highly encouragedΒ to bring their own artefacts as examples for the group to discuss and consider what the objects challenges and needs might be.

The extensive experience of Artlab’s Senior Objects Conservator,Β Justin GareΒ will give insight into the innovative techniques used in the preservation of the State’s collections as well as family treasures.Β  Artlab Australia is a recognised leader in the conservation of cultural collections with a national and international reputation since 1985. Their highly skilled conservators care for cultural heritage, working across five specialised laboratories, undertaking stabilisation, repair and restoration of a huge variety of artefacts. These range from major artworks and ethnographic and historic artefacts, to archival documents and records, large technology items and outdoor monuments.Β Β 

Please keep in mind when selecting an artefact any potential pest risk associated with the preservation of historic materials. About the presenterΒ - Justin Gare, Senior Objects Conservator Artlab Australia

Originally trained as a carpenter and joiner, Justin worked in domestic building with a particular interest in heritage buildings in Hahndorf. Currently, he is a Senior Objects Conservator at Artlab Australia, having worked there for the past 22 years. He has worked on a broad array of objects such as the Gandhi assignation garments and the Eureka Flag through to the furniture collections of Carrick Hill and Art Gallery of South Australia.
