Innovations in Taiwan's Semiconductor Industry
2025 UTS FEIT Research Excellence Lecture Series - Guest Lecture
Abstract
Taiwan semiconductor industry is a key player in global IC fabrication. This lecture will provide key insights into Taiwan semiconductor industry chain, covering the IC Design, Manufacturing, and Packaging technologies, as well as outline of material and equipment eco-systems that support this sector. A critical review on technological road map of TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company LTC) will highlight their leadership in advanced fabrication process, including EUV lithography, 3D packaging, and silicon photonics for AI chips. In particular, the lecture will detail the novel immersion technology, which significantly increase NA (Numerical Aperture) from 0.3 to 1.3 across five technology generations. Additionally, several AI applications in IC design and manufacturing will be presented, showcasing how these advancements push the boundaries of physical limitations nowadays. These innovations are the key factors that position TSMC as a leader amongst other global semiconductor companies, including the main competitors such as Intel and Samsung. Finally, the potential opportunity to import green hydrogen from Australia to support Taiwan semiconductor industry will be explored. Several key technologies for green hydrogen generation, storage and transportation will be identified as essential components of this emerging high-tech business and industrial model.
To foster the collaboration, this lecture will introduce the internship scholarship program of Taiwan IIPP https://iipp.tw/
and TEEP https://teep.studyintaiwan.org/. In addition, Taiwan’s initiatives in semiconductor education and training, including the Semiconductor Summer Camp and the short time semiconductor studying program, will be highlighted as pathways to potential partnership.
