Innovative Finance: The Catalyst for Impact in Education

Event description

Education is the great enabler. And we are all of us lifelong students. Yet, seven out of ten children in low- and middle-income countries are unable to read with understanding by age ten and two thirds of training and skills for employment programs have no impact on employment outcomes. Compounding these challenges is an annual financing gap of $100bn required to meet Sustainable Development Goal 4 for Education (SDG4).

New solutions and models need to be developed and deployed in order to harness the potential of innovation and change course. Innovative financing, in its different configurations such as impact bonds, Pay-for-Results and Outcomes-Based Financing, has demonstrated to be a viable option to focus the efforts on achievement of tangible and verifiable impact, while mobilizing public and private capital and promote innovation. While innovative financing is widely and successfully used in other sectors such as energy, WASH and agriculture, in the sphere of education and employment has recently gained momentum as a potential way to address some of the most complex challenges connected with learning and employment.

Event Details

The session will bring together representatives from government, financial institutions, public and private organisations that are leading the scale up of different innovative financing mechanisms for more and better financing of education. The panelists will share their experiences as well as their recommendations for the expansion of the innovative financing ecosystem, to promote widespread adoption within the education sector and an acceleration in the achievement of SDG 4 objectives. The panel event will be followed by an opportunity to network over drinks and canapes.

Framing Questions: What will it take to double the volume of innovative financing for education by 2030? What challenges and opportunities have we encountered so far in the use of innovative financing in education? What roles should the different public and private stakeholders fulfill to guarantee success?
