Inspiring Mini Lessons & Reflection Time (Limestone Coast)
Event description
Inspiring Mini Lessons & Reflection Time
(Limestone Coast)
Facilitated by Amanda Bartram
This is a follow-up workshop for those who have already participated in our Introduction to Bookmaking or Introduction to Writer’s Notebook Mini Courses.
If you have embraced the Writing Workshop in your teaching, you will know what a powerful pedagogical approach it is. The mini lesson and reflection time are where you, the educator, get to inspire, motivate and explicitly teach the young writers you work with. These two key parts of the Workshop set the scene for effective independent writing time, support an inquiry stance about writing and are essential in developing a ‘community’ of writers in your site.
Whether you are establishing Writing Workshop and working on organisational strategies, or in a ‘spotlight’ study and so focussing on crafting, genre or process aspects of writing, your mini lessons and reflection times need to be clear, responsive and engaging for each and every writer in your class. Each young writer needs to see how the explicit teaching ‘fits’ with them as an author.
Having a clear understanding of how the mini lesson and reflection time work, and being able to plan in responsive ways for both will maximise the effectiveness of Writing Workshop and ensure that planned ‘spotlight’ studies are dynamic whilst maintaining cohesion. Join us to develop strategies for more inspiring and effective mini lessons and reflection times.
In this workshop, Amanda will:
- Introduce the role and structure of mini lessons and reflection times during the Writing Workshop
- Share strategies for ensuring clarity, engagement and participation are optimised
- Show how effective mini lessons and reflection time relate to independent writing time, conferencing and publishing
- Share a way to plan for effective mini lessons that incorporate high impact strategies for teaching and learning
- Provide examples and demonstrations
