Event description

inSTEM is a networking and career development conference for people from marginalised or underrepresented groups in STEM, and their allies.  It is an initiative of the STEM-focused ARC Centres of Excellence.

Networking is a key strategy for career progression, yet numerous studies have shown that women’s networks are less powerful than men’s and that women seem to be less equipped to leverage the networks they do have when it comes to their career. Further research has found that this is not an issue specific to women but is indicative of the experiences of marginalised groups in general.

inSTEM will offer attendees a safe space where they can meet, make connections and build relationships with other researchers and research scholars.  Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from leading experts on topics and strategies that support career development and progression.  We will also discuss how to create change that improves access, supports retention, and champions success in STEM for individuals from marginalised or underrepresented groups.

Day 1 of inSTEM

The first day is focused on enhancing diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Opening with a session on Decolonising Research, we emphasise the importance of respecting Indigenous culture, land, and intellectual property.

The day will feature a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) panel sharing powerful lived experiences, followed by active bystander training tailored for junior staff. We’ll delve into neurodiversity and engage in vital discussions about supporting trans and non-binary colleagues, addressing their unique needs and concerns.

Participants will also have the opportunity to brainstorm barriers in the workplace through interactive roundtables, exploring solutions from an intersectional perspective. Leaders and allies will gain insights on fostering effective communication across cultures and becoming better allies.

Networking Dinner

To cap off an inspiring day, join us for a networking dinner at a nearby venue. We’ll kick off the evening with a short speed networking session, giving you a chance to connect with fellow attendees before enjoying some food and drinks. This relaxed setting will be perfect for sharing insights from the day’s discussions and building lasting relationships.

Day 2 of inSTEM

The second day is focused on collaboration, mental health, and career development. We’ll start the day with yarning circles, where attendees can propose topics and facilitate small group discussions. This is a fantastic opportunity for under-represented groups to share their experiences, identify commonalities, and co-create solutions that can be shared with the broader community.

Next, dive into our Mental Health and Wellbeing Bootcamp, featuring interactive breakout sessions on crucial topics such as navigating uncertainty, avoiding burnout, overcoming imposter syndrome, and women supporting women.

The day will continue with our Career Development Bootcamp, structured similarly with breakout sessions that cover essential skills. Topics include enhancing your LinkedIn presence, mapping out multiple career pathways, media training, and effective mentorship strategies. In the afternoon, explore parallel sessions on important themes like men taking carers leave and creating menopause-friendly workplaces.

We encourage you to join us in person to fully experience the event, including networking opportunities and interactive sessions. However, for those who are unable to attend in person, we are pleased to offer a virtual attendance option to ensure accessibility for all. Most of the sessions will be streamed, and you can register your virtual attendance for free. All registrants will receive a link to the stream closer to the start of the event.
