Event Description
California has ambitious goals to address its housing crisis, improve transportation, mitigate climate change, and improve residents' quality of life. But reducing greenhouse gas emissions, delivering new housing, and uplifting communities left behind depend on local and regional implementation, and implementation remains the most formidable challenge. Agencies and governments must adopt new approaches and solutions, and work in new ways to implement them, often departing from the status quo or existing internal structures. Academic evidence can offer promising insights into the types of efforts and directions necessary, but says less about how cities actually enact them. This conference bridges that gap, highlighting approaches from outside the Los Angeles region that have made a real difference, shared by the people who made them happen.
This year’s conference explores critical and interconnected themes in housing and transportation, including new technical solutions and policy innovations, as well as the value of small-scale tools and pilot programs. These new ideas and incremental change work to serve as a potential pathway to addressing structural problems. Speakers will discuss how interagency processes need to change to achieve the intended outcomes. In addition, the conference will explore how the policy window on disaster recovery offers an opportunity to advance housing and transportation reform that could address longstanding inequities alongside these newly identified challenges. Closing the gap between policy ambition in California and on-the-ground reality requires not just better ideas, but also better ways to put them into practice.
