Intermediate hand building in ceramics (8 weeks)
Event description
Intermediate hand building in ceramics (8 weeks)
Explore specific techniques and materials that will help you realise your ceramic projects!
This intermediate class in ceramics are for those whose know the basics of hand building ceramics and have made a dozen pieces or so of work. We will begin the first class talking and brainstorming about possible projects-preferably the student will come in with pictures or drawings of inspiration or influences they would like to draw upon however we can work through this in class also or the student may have a preference to see what the medium has in store for them depending on how they wish to work- all is welcome! From this we will begin to explore more specific techniques and materials that may help the individual student to realise their project. Things that will be possibly covered depending on students:
Basic slip casting (one part mold making with plaster), decorating with slips, underglaze, oxide and glazes, mark making and creating texture, decorative coil building, soft slab work as well as slump and hump moulds, making your own stamps and mark making tools, creating coloured clays and marbling coloured clays, combining different clay bodies, embedding grog into clay for effect, using commercial underglaze transfers, monoprinting onto clay surfaces, making tiles, mixing hand building with rudimentary wheel throwing, the design elements and necessary basics for making functional ceramics (things you use every day and things you eat off).
