Event description

Australian companies continue to expand into new international territories, including countries affected by, or prone to, armed conflict. Whilst corporates have strong human rights frameworks in place, international humanitarian law (IHL, also known as the laws of war) has remained largely unknown, exposing companies and business personnel to heightened legal, operational, ethical and reputational risks.

Australian Red Cross and Nyman Gibson Miralis Lawyers have developed a "Guide on corporate war crimes and other liabilities" to help businesses understand some of their unique legal risks under IHL.  Join us as we explore some of the ways corporations may be liable for war crimes in Australia.

  • Fauve Kurnadi (Australian Red Cross) will provide an introduction to IHL and its relevance to Australian businesses and corporations
  • Dr Jonathan Kolieb (RMIT) will provide an introduction to corporate war crimes and provide case examples
  • Dennis Miralis (NGM) will consider the domestic application of IHL and how companies may be held liable for war crimes and other related liabilities (such as proceeds of crime and sanctions matters).

The event will be hosted in-person in Sydney and online at no cost to participants. Please register your interest through the Humanitix link.

For those attending in person: Join us on 31 May at the Law Society of NSW, Room 201 + 202, 170 Phillip St, Sydney NSW 2000. Catering will be provided from 12pm onwards with a 12.30pm start.
