International Jazz Day with Jamie Oehlers and Masters & Apprentices

Celebrate International Jazz Day with Internationally renowned saxophonist and composer Jamie Oehlers and students of the Jazz & Improvisation degree. This special performance features the 'Masters & Apprentices' ensemble performing Jamie's compositions alongside him, and concludes Jamie's week as artist in residence at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Jamie Oehlers is one of Australia’s leading jazz artists and saxophonists.

In 2003 Jamie was the winner of the World Saxophone Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and has won numerous awards in Australia, including an Australian Jazz “Bell” Award for Best Australian Jazz Artist and three for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, an ABC Limelight Award for Best Jazz CD Release, an Australian Young Achiever of the Year Award, and has twice been a finalist in the ARIA awards for Best Jazz Album. He has performed throughout the world including major festivals like the JVC Jazz Festival in New York, BBC London Jazz Festival, Jazz Yatra in India, Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Villa Celimontana Jazz Festival in Rome, Galway Jazz festival, Brecon Jazz Festival, and comprehensively throughout Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Jamie has collaborated with many great international jazz artists within Australia and overseas including performances and recordings with Ari Hoenig, Aaron Goldberg, George Garzone, Charlie Haden, Eric Harland, Reuben Rogers, Rufus Reid, Geri Allen, Cindy Blackman, Jamie Cullum, Bob Hurst, Megan Washington, Kate Ceberano and many more. He has released 14 albums as a leader, including his most recent recordings “Between the Lines of Stillness”, “Innocent Dreamer” (with Tal Cohen), and “The Burden of Memory” (with Paul Grabowsky, Eric Harland and Reuben Rogers). As a sideman, Jamie has recorded on over 100 recordings.

This concert takes place in Lionel's Lounge. Please enter Lionel's Lounge via Grant Street, Southbank, to be admitted to the space by Front of House staff.

PARKING

The City of Melbourne has recently changed the parking restrictions around the Southbank Campus. Parking control hours are now expanded to 7am–10pm, seven days per week, and are capped at three hours. A $2-per-hour fee after 7pm is also now in place. There is no change to the $4-per-hour peak rate between 7am–7pm. Parking inspectors are regularly in the area fining drivers who overstay their meter, so we encourage everyone to be aware and avoid an expensive fine.

• In order to account for drop-off in attendance, we overbook a select number of free events at the Faculty. If you have not arrived by the start of the performance, your ticket may be released to any waiting patrons at the door. Please arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before the performance to secure your seat.  

• Admission to any of our concerts and events is strictly at the discretion of Front of House. We have zero tolerance for any disrespectful behaviour.
