Event description

Join us for a FREE community event and shared lunch celebrating International Women's Day at Surf Coast Shire Council on Wednesday 5th March.

This year's International Women’s Day theme is 'Accelerate Action', and Surf Coast Shire welcomes author Jane Gilmore to share her insights into grassroots activism and how communities often have far more power than they realise when it comes to making the world a better place. Gender based violence and online misogyny can feel sometimes too big to change, but the truth is that real change has always started with small steps in small communities. Join us for a discussion filled with optimism and hope for the future.

About Jane Gilmore: Jane is an author, feminist and ex-journalist from Melbourne, Australia. She is the creator of the 'Fixed It' campaign targeting media reporting of men’s violence against women. This campaign has been instrumental in enacting change and correcting the narrative of women's misrepresentation in the media. Jane has also been researching and writing about the causes and effects of violence and poverty for almost two decades, and is now undertaking a PhD investigating how to make prevention education more effective.

This event is inclusive to all across the community, we invite women, men and gender diverse people of all ages to join us as we celebrate International Women's Day 2025.

Jane's presentation will touch on topics including gender based violence and mental health. If you or someone you know needs support, contact 1800 RESPECT or Lifeline on 13 11 14.

The venue is accessible for wheelchairs, hearing loops and noise cancelling headphones are also available upon request.

If you have any access or support needs to participate fully, please let us know when you RSVP.
