Greens Senator Dr Mehreen Faruqi is delighted to be hosting her eighth annual International Women's Day breakfast on Friday 4 March 2022. This event is known for its honest and radical discussion of gender and race and its privileging of women of colour’s voices.

Past speakers have included Nayuka Gorrie, Hawraa Kash, Roanna Gonsalves, Saman Shad, Nakkiah Lui, Randa Abdel-Fattah, Vanessa Turnbull-Roberts, Celeste Liddle, Diana Sayed, and Dr Umber Rind.

This year our speakers will be Amy Thunig and Varsha Yajman.

Amy Thunig is an academic and PhD candidate in the School of Education at Macquarie University, a member of various education focused committees, and a Director at Story Factory in Redfern. A Gomeroi/Kamilaroi woman, Amy is an author, media writer and panellist, regularly appearing on television programs such as ABC’s The Drum, and writing for publications such as Buzzfeed, Sydney Book Review, IndigenousX, The Guardian, Junkee, Women’s Agenda and more. In 2019 Amy gave her TEDx talk ‘Disruption is not a dirty word’, and in 2022 her first book ‘Tell Me Again’ will be published with UQP. A mother and active community member, Amy resides on the unceded Awabakal land. 

Varsha Yajman is a 19-year-old university student, podcaster and an advocate for climate justice and mental health awareness. She has been an organiser for School Strike for Climate, the Australian Youth Climate Coalition. Varsha is now a coordinator at SAPNA South Asian Climate Solidarity Network and a paralegal at Equity Generation Lawyers which conducts climate change ligation. Her work along with her podcast, Not to be Controversial, aim to create a community for young South Asians to feel represented and empowered.

This event has sold out each year so we strongly encourage you to book early.

Please note: This is an autonomous event for all people who identify as women. Please respect this and only book if you meet this criteria.

Dietary requirements

The breakfast will be vegetarian, including eggs and dairy. When you book your ticket, you will be asked to indicate if you have additional dietary requirements. The caterers will not be able to accommodate dietary requests after Friday 18 February. 

Seating

Seating will be allocated so please email no later than Friday 18 February if you have a request to sit with another person: senator.faruqi@aph.gov.au Requests made after this date may not be able to be accommodated. 

Getting there

Breakfast is in the Tea Room of the Queen Victoria Building. Please arrive 7.15am for a 7.30am start. The Tea Room is on level three at the Northern end of the QVB. Lifts are available straight to level three from outside Koko Black on the Ground Floor.
