Event description

Deputy Leader of the Australian Greens Dr Mehreen Faruqi is delighted to be hosting her tenth annual International Women's Day breakfast on Friday 8 March 2024. This event is known for its honest and radical discussion, and hearing from women of colour and First Nations women.

Previous speakers have included Sarah Malik, Lynda-June Coe, Dr Umber Rind, Celeste Liddle, Kween G, Nayuka Gorrie, Roanna Gonsalves, Saman Shad, Nakkiah Lui, Randa Abdel-Fattah, Vanessa Turnbull-Roberts, Diana Sayed, and many more.

This year our speaker will be researcher and activist Heba Al-Adawy. Another speaker will be announced soon.

------------------------------------------

Heba Al-Adawy straddles the worlds of activism, academia and policy to untangle systemic racism and pursue political justice. She has organised for women war survivors from Bosnia, worked on justice for Palestine and has amplified youth-led struggles for climate justice in the Global South. Growing up in Pakistan, Heba brings a Global South positionality to her research and activism. She is currently finishing her PhD on youth movements and militarization in South Asia at ANU.

Takesa Frank is a proud Aboriginal person living on Yuin Country on the South Coast of NSW. She is passionate about First Nations justice, protecting sacred sites, and safeguarding our planet. Last year Takesa took environmental action into her own hands when she camped in a tree overnight where she successfully stopped machines logging native forests in Tasmania. For her staunch environmentalism, Takesa was awarded the Bob Brown Foundation’s young environmentalist for 2023.

Lujane Elwan is the daughter and granddaughter of Palestinian refugees who come from a small village called Yibna and were forced out as a result of the Nakba in 1948. Lujane is a 17 year old Palestinian high school student who dedicates herself to the Palestinian cause, through giving tribute to her roots and sharing the story of over 80 family members still currently in Gaza. One of the ways Lujane fights for Palestinian liberation is through poetry and she will read one of her inspiring poems at this year's IWD.
