A bit about the course and the experience:

In January 2024, 14 law students, accompanied by Dr. Jonathan Liljeblad as the course convenor, embarked on a month-long experience in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. There, they interned with multiple grassroots civil society organizations focused on improving rule of law, access to justice, and human rights. This course combines the disciplines of law and development studies to provide students with insight into working in the development space in countries like Cambodia, as well as insights into Cambodia's situation regarding rule of law and access to justice. Six organizations participated: the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC), Cambodian Legal Education Centre (CLEC), Cambodian Human Rights Action Coalition (CHRAC), Open Development Cambodia (ODC), Legal Aid Cambodia (LAC), and Legal Support for Women and Children (LSCW). Two to four students were allocated to each organization. After a month of working in Phnom Penh and forming unforgettable connections with CSO staff members, the students spent time in Siem Reap and Kampot, immersing themselves in Cambodia's beautiful sites and learning about the history and challenges shaping the development space in Cambodia and the rest of Southeast Asia.
