“It’s Just a Check-up isn’t it?” Interpreting in Medical Settings
Description
Session description
Medical interpreting can be unpredictable. What begins as a routine appointment may involve difficult news, safeguarding concerns, mental health issues or unexpected treatment decisions. Interpreters need to assess their readiness, prepare with the information available and make professional decisions when circumstances change.
This workshop does not focus on medical vocabulary or anatomy. Instead, it examines the practical realities of healthcare interpreting before, during and after an assignment. We will consider what questions to ask in advance, how to prepare when details are limited, ways to develop experience through CPD, observation and shadowing, and how to respond if an appointment moves into an unfamiliar or specialist area.
Through realistic case studies and discussion, participants will consider professional boundaries, circumstances in which withdrawal may be appropriate and the value of debriefing, reflection and support after demanding appointments.
