Into the heart of the Great Glen Fault
Description
Join One Minute Geology’s Professor David Dobson to explore the Great Glen Fault. This is a major, crustal scale fault, which leaves its mark right across the Scottish Highlands, from Corpach to Inverness. From the comfort of An Cafaidh Mara we will estimate the displacement of the fault from the geological map and relate that to the great tectonic events which formed Scotland’s mountains during the Caledonian Orogeny. Then, armed with an understanding of how strike-slip faults work, we will visit the core of the fault in one of the few places where it is exposed along its entire length, a short drive away at Torcastle. Visiting the fault core requires a short walk, with some rougher off-path walking for those that want to.
All proceeds go to Glencoe Mountain Rescue, in memory of Ben Williams.
