Into the Wild - Hiking navigation skills (Autumn 2026)

Do you want to spend more time in nature? Perhaps get off the beaten track, away from the crowds? During this 2 day navigation course you'll gain the skills and knowledge to allow yourself to confidently venture INTO THE WILD

​Whether you're just starting your bush walking journey or are an experienced hiker looking to go that little bit further, you're be sure to gain new knowledge and skills that will help achieve your goals.

Wilderness navigation and map reading should be an essential part of every outdoorsy persons skill set.

More often than not we tend to rely on our phones gps and inbuilt maps for navigation purposes. Although these tools are incredibly useful at times they should not be solely relied upon. The ability to read the land, paired with a map and compass is an essential skill for any one wanting to spend time in our wild places.

This workshop is all about getting you ready and geared up with the knowledge to make your journey outdoors safe and enjoyable.

What we'll cover over the 2 days includes;

• Risk management in the wilderness

• Snake bite mitigation, treatment and response

• Emergency response and PLB's

• Basic navigation essentials

• Map types and features

• Understanding Topographical maps​

• Land features

• Compass types and use

• Understanding the compass 

• Trip intention forms

• Route planning for terrain, distance and time

• Grid references

• Taking a bearing

• Triangulation - finding where you are on the map

• Pacing and estimating distance

• Navigating through untracked terrain

• plus more......

The 1st day is largely theory based, interspersed with practical activities around the campground. We'll gain an solid understanding on the information contained in our Topographical maps and we'll get a grasp on how to use the compass.

Day 2 is all about getting out into the bush and putting our skills to the test. After planning our route we'll spend the day hiking through a mixture of terrain both on and off track. The emphasis here is on awareness of where we are at any one time and the awareness of the surrounding landscape.

How Much:
$360 for both days.  (plus booking fee)
$190 for Saturday only

$90 Youth one day (Under 16yrs, must be accompanied by a paying adult)

$170 Youth both days (Under 16yrs, must be accompanied by a paying adult)

​Camping onsite included - 
**Camping Saturday night is free with the 2 day ticket purchase

What to bring?

• Camping gear tent, mattress, torch etc (or sleep in your van etc)

• Notebook and pen

• Food and drinks for the duration

• Drinking water

• Towel and swimmers (we have 1.5km of the upper Tweed river on our property)

• Coffee..... don't forget your coffee
  

  The Hundred Tents camping area is a large open 2wd accessible grassy campground.

  It has a huge undercover area we can utilise for our training in wet weather. It has a camp kitchen with electric cooktop, sink, fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave.

  The amenities block composting toilets and hot showers.

  
  Please bring your own plate, mug and cutlery.

Note: power is available at the campground

Uki is the nearest town - 14min drive - Small supermarket, cafes, pie shop, pub, petrol, Bastion Lane espresso bar and the best Mountain Bike park in the region.
